What a year it has been already! Did January feel like it had 36 weeks to anyone else? Now that we’re in February—the month of love, Black History Month, and the month I celebrate six years in business—I want to share what this month means to me.

Celebrating six years in business this month is a significant milestone. February has always been a pivotal month for me. Just last year, I completed my Mat Pilates certification in February, and of course, it’s Black History Month, a time to reflect on the contributions and achievements of Black individuals throughout history.

I often get asked what led me to reflexology, the core of A Touch of Balance. My journey began with a desire to enter the world of bodywork without becoming a massage therapist or chiropractor. I also wanted the freedom from a traditional 9-5 schedule and a chance to help people with their wellness. This passion has expanded my business to include Pilates and now assisted stretching. As I continue to grow and learn, I hope to share my journey with you all, inspiring you through movement and motivation.

Being in business for six years has taught me countless lessons. I started part-time, and if you’re considering entrepreneurship but are hesitant to take the leap, start small. I began with just one day a week in the back of a Pilates studio while working full-time in a nail salon. Gradually, I increased to two days a week until I felt ready to go full-time.

Entrepreneurship has its highs and lows, but here are some key insights for anyone starting out:

1. Believe in Yourself and Your Craft: Confidence is crucial. Trust in your abilities and the unique value you bring to the table.

2. Set SMART Goals: Goals should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For example, instead of saying, "I want to grow my business," a SMART goal would be, "I aim to increase my client base by 20% over the next six months by offering a new referral program."

3. Overcome Imposter Syndrome: It’s common to feel like a fraud, especially when starting out. Remember, even the most successful people have felt this way. Combat these feelings by acknowledging your achievements and seeking feedback from trusted peers.

4. Avoid Analysis Paralysis: It’s easy to get stuck in the planning phase, overwhelmed by options. To overcome this, set deadlines for decision-making and break tasks into smaller, manageable steps. For instance, if launching a new service, outline each step from research to marketing, and tackle them one at a time.

5. Have an Accountability Partner: Whether it’s a friend, colleague, or mentor, having someone to hold you accountable can keep you on track and motivated.

6. Celebrate Your Wins: No matter how small, every achievement is a step forward. Celebrating these moments can boost your morale and keep you motivated.

Don’t be afraid to pivot, add, or remove elements from your business if they no longer serve you. At the end of the day, no one knows your business like you do. While it’s beneficial to listen to others, be cautious of falling into imposter syndrome or analysis paralysis. When these challenges arise, take time to breathe, journal, and of course, come see me for reflexology, stretching, or Pilates.
